Mayweather/Cotto - Canelo/Mosley

I know I'm in the minority being a boxing fan. I am well aware of that. I know most people dont pay much attention to the sport until its a Mayweather or a Pacquaio fight... Well we got a Mayweather fight coming up May 5th so if anyone wants to read my $.02 on things below maybe you could use it to be a gambling degenerate or maybe you could use it to spill a little bit of knowledge with the people you plan on watching the fight with... I've also realized there arent many places to get good boxing information or commentary online. Its not like looking up the Bulls game. I'm trying to find some decent post fight recaps from last nights Dawson/Hopkins and the pickings are slim. That being said I'm actually heavily considering starting up my own boxing blog just for the hell of it. Just to get my commentary out there for anyone interested. Maybe there are one or two people. Anyways though, here's my preview for May 5ths fights...

Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Miguel Cotto

Why Floyd Mayweather can win…(42-0-0 26KO) Not only has he never lost a fight, but he rarely does he even lose a round. In all the fights I’ve watched I only remember him getting hit with 1 legitimate shot that stunned him, and he bounced back beautifully and won the next 10 rounds of that fight. People have said over and over what guys Floyd is “scared” of. The problem is, those guys end up proving to be frauds a few months after the fact. People said Floyd was scared of Paul Williams, until one Sergio Martinez left hook made Williams whole career fall. People said Floyd was scared of Antonio Margarito. Has Margarito even won a fight since getting busted for having plaster in his gloves? Who else have people said Floyd is scared of? Marcos Maidana? Please. The bottom line remains he is the most dominant fighter on the planet. If/when he loses a fight he will still be going into that fight as a heavy favorite, and that includes any fight with Manny Pacquaio that may or may not happen. Mayweather remains the best defensive fighter alive. His speed is unmatched. When you watch him fight, you can’t expect a bloodbath or a knockout. That is why Pacquaio has the common person on his side in the tired debate but Floyd has the true boxing experts on his side. If you can appreciate the science and the art of boxing then Floyd is a thing of beauty, a technician in the ring. Floyd might lack power, but his accuracy is amazing. Punching accuracy is something that goes unnoticed when people analyze boxing. All they talk about is how fast you are and how powerful you are. A lot of those power guys need to throw 10 punches to land 1. Mayweather lands everything he throws. He’s like Greg Maddux putting the ball exactly where he wants it. Painting the corners. You aren’t hitting him, and when he throws a punch its hitting you right where he wants to hit you. Its not a Randy Johnson fastball which is what the casual baseball viewer prefers and its not a Manny Pacquaio knockout punch which is what the casual boxing viewer prefers, but if you appreciate the art then Floyd is a thing of beauty. This might not be appealing to a random meat head who just wants to see blood. Floyd is the most gifted fighter on the planet and coming up with a paragraph why he should win a fight is like helping a 1st grader write an essay. Childs play.

Why Miguel Cotto can win… (37-2-0 30KO) Miguel Cotto is the most formidable opponent that Mayweather has fought in a long time. He only has 2 career losses. One of those losses is to Antonio Margarito who shortly after that fight got busted for using hand wraps containing plaster. Lets put an asterisk next to that loss. Even more so considering Cotto revenged that loss in last years rematch and made very easy work of Margarito. His other loss is to Manny Pacquaio and you cant say a guy isnt a good fighter based on that. Every fight he has had since 2005 he has been winning a championship or defending a championship. His resume is there, and at 31 years old he is not a washed up superstar (ie Mosley or Delahoya) but instead a superstar in his prime. He is clearly the underdog but Mayweather has every reason in the world to be over confident. Cotto is an awfully formidable opponent to be over confident with. All of the pressure is on Floyd Mayweather. He has his undefeated record on the line. He has his best in the world status on the line. In the ring Floyd is all about speed and defense. His best offense is running his mouth outside of the ring. Floyd Mayweather is going to jail next month. That weapon of running his mouth is going to be taken away from him for a few months. Can you imagine if Floyd lost this fight and then immediately had to go away to jail where he couldn’t run his mouth about a rematch or bad refereeing or bad judges or whatever excuse he may want to use? Floyd would lose his first fight and then have to be quiet in prison for the next few months? Wow. Talk about hurting a legacy. The other part of this is the common belief that Mayweather is looking at a fight with Canelo Alvarez as his first fight out of prison. Canelo is a big PPV draw with the Mexican fan base and since he is still so young he is a fairly low risk fight for Mayweather who will need to shake some rust not being able to do his day-to-day training in jail. If Cotto pulls the upset on Saturday doesn’t that mean Floyd has to go for the rematch with Cotto straight out of jail? At least if he wants to redeem his reputation he does. That’s an awfully tough fight for someone who should be looking to shake off prison rust at that point. What if that rust were to allow Cotto to win the rematch as well? Remember when Floyd thought he could strong arm Pacquaio in negotiations? He’d be begging for that fight to redeem his career at that point.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Shane Mosley

Why Canelo Alvarez can win… (39-0-1 29KO) He is stronger. He is more powerful. Canelo has a “heavy punch”. He is fighting a man who is well past his prime and many people suspect he’s just trying to collect a few big paychecks before he no longer has the ability to get high profile fights anymore. Canelo is one of the best prospects in the sport. He has an enormous following by the Mexican fan base, and because Mayweather is strongly considering Canelo as his next fight they (boxing) will be doing everything in their power to help Canelo win this coming weekend. Whether it be shady judges or referee antics or whatever. Mayweather/Canelo loses a lot of its luster if Canelo is not undefeated for the fight. Plus with Canelo’s lack of quality opponents on his resume so far, if he loses Saturday fans are going to question why he even deserves a chance to fight Floyd (and rightfully so). Canelo has the potential. He is a 5-tool prospect in baseball. He is a blue chip in basketball. While most of his career has been fighting Mexican no-names up to this point the fact remains he is only 21 years old and because he turned pro so early he has already racked up 40 wins with 29 knockouts. The potential is there for Canelo and they are setting this up to be his coming out party for the mainstream boxing fans. Cinco de Mayo against old man Mosley.

Why Shane Mosley can win… (46-7-1 39KO) Shane Mosley is a legend in the sport. There was a period several years back where he was pound for pound the best fighter on the planet. Shane Mosley in his prime was maybe the most dominant fighter in my lifetime with the exception of when Mike Tyson when he was going thru his run of knocking everybody out in less than a minute. He is 40 years old now, there is no denying that. There is no denying he has not won a fight since 2009 either. But what happens just when you are ready to write a legend off? That’s when Michael Jordan scores 50 in Madison Square Garden wearing the #45. Shane Mosley has been in Las Vegas fighting high profile PPV countless times. This is new stuff for the 21 year old Canelo. Will the bright lights blind Canelo? Mosley’s last 2 losses have come to Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather. Is that reason to write him off? Who hasn’t lost to those 2? The fact is he went the 12 round distance with both of them. He knocked Manny Pacquiao down and he hit Floyd harder than I ever seen him hit in round 2 of their fight. Prior to those losses there was a loss to Miguel Cotto and 2 losses to Winky Wright several years back. Those are proven, legitimate superstar fighters he has lost to. Canelo Alvarez isn’t at that point yet. Everyone is ready to write Mosley off, and maybe they are right. But maybe 2 losses fighting 24 rounds against the best 2 fighters on the planet isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Canelo is wet behind the ears. For all the hype he gets he still has holes in his game and who better to expose those holes then a guy who has seen it all in the ring.

Fuck CISPA

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) is a United States proposed law introduced on November 30, 2011 by U.S. Representative Michael Rogers (R-MI). and 111 co-sponsors.

The bill would give the U.S. government additional options and resources to ensure the security of networks against attacks and enforce copyright and patents; however, the most recent version of the CISPA bill has removed any reference to intellectual property

Several commentators have distinguished CISPA from the controversial (SOPA) bill.

CISPA was reported out of committee on December 1, 2011 and has yet to be debated or brought to a vote.

CISPA has been criticized by advocates of Internet privacy and neutrality, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Avaaz.org, because they feel it contains too few limits on how and when the government may monitor private information, and because they feel there should be stronger safeguards included as to how the data may be used; they claim that such new powers could be used to find and punish file sharers rather than the stated foreign spies or hackers.
